Zwischenräume des Alltags
Fotografie im urbanen Raum – oft richte ich meinen Blick dorthin, wo er im Alltag kaum verweilt: Auf die Übergangszonen.
Auf jene Passagen, Gänge, Tunnel und Durchgänge in Bahnhöfen, die täglich von unzähligen Menschen durchquert werden. Aber selten von ihnen auch bewusst wahrgenommen werden. Es sind Orte des Dazwischen, funktional und flüchtig, oft anonym und leer. Sie sind Mittel zum Zweck, Teil der täglichen Bewegungen. Mitunter architektonisch ausgestaltet, nur selten grau. Aber meist funktional. Für diejenigen, die sie durchqueren, scheinbar bedeutungslos. Wenn man aber hinschaut, dann entfalten sie eine ganz eigene Atmosphäre – still, surreal und manchmal fast zeitlos.
Und doch sind sie voller Geschichte – nicht im klassischen Sinn, sondern als stille Bühne für ständige Veränderung.Es sind Orte, Orte, die für Menschen gestaltet wurden – die oft (fast) ohne Menschen still zu stehen scheinen, während kurze Zeit später Passanten hindurch eilen.
Diese Orte sind für Menschen gestaltet, aber selten für den Aufenthalt gedacht. Sie wirken anonym, fast wie Niemandsland – und gerade das macht sie spannend. In der Abwesenheit von Zweck und Ziel wird der Raum selbst sichtbar. Ohne die Eile der Passanten zeigt sich eine ganz eigene Atmosphäre: ruhig, surreal, manchmal fast entrückt von der Realität da draußen.
Wenn ich dort mit der Kamera stehe, verändert sich etwas. Ich warte. Beobachte. Warte noch ein bisschen. Vielleicht ist der Gang leer, vielleicht nähert sich jemand, vielleicht hallt nur ein leiser Schritt oder das Rattern eines Koffers durch den Raum. Für einen Moment scheint die Zeit stillzustehen – das Licht fällt in einem bestimmten Winkel, eine Linie im Beton zieht den Blick, die Leere bekommt plötzlich Gewicht. Die Kamera hilft mir, diesen flüchtigen Augenblick zu fassen.
Mit der Serie „Liminal Spaces“ möchte ich diese Zwischenräume sichtbar machen – als Orte des Übergangs, des kurzen Innehaltens, des unbewussten Alltags. Sie sind weder Anfang noch Ende, sondern das Dazwischen – und genau darin liegt ihre stille Kraft.
Photography in the urban area – I often look at my gaze to where it hardly linger in everyday life: on the transition zones.
On those passages, corridors, tunnels and passages in train stations that are crossed every day by countless people. But rarely are perceived consciously by them. They are places of the in between, functional and fleeting, often anonymous and empty. They are means to an end, part of the daily movements. Sometimes architecturally designed, rarely gray. But mostly functional. For those who cross them, apparently meaningless. But when you look, then they develop their very own atmosphere – quiet, surreal and sometimes almost timeless.
And yet they are full of history – not in the classic sense, but as a silent stage for constant change. There are places, places that were designed for people – which often (almost) seem to stand still without people, while a short time later passers -by rush.
These places are designed for people, but rarely intended for the stay. They look anonymous, almost like no man’s land – and that is what makes them exciting. In the absence of purpose and goal, the room itself becomes visible. Without the hurry of the passers -by, there is a very own atmosphere: calm, surreal, sometimes almost ranging from reality out there.
When I stand there with the camera, something changes. I’m waiting. Observe. Wait a little more. Maybe the gear is empty, maybe someone will approach, maybe just a quiet step or rattling a suitcase through the room. For a moment, the time seems to stand still – the light falls at a certain angle, a line in the concrete draws your gaze, the emptiness suddenly gets weight. The camera helps me to grasp this fleeting moment.
With the „Liminal Spaces“ series, I would like to make these gaps visible – as a places of transition, short pause, the unconscious everyday life. They are neither the beginning nor the end, but that in between – and that is exactly the silent strength.
