Searching the Light… Ja… und dann? Wohin damit?

Fotografie braucht Licht… Fotografie ist Malen mit Licht (heißt es überall und immer wieder, wenn man sich dem Thema widmet). Und das stimmt natürlich, aber das hört sich einfacher an, als es sich dann in der Praxis umsetzen lässt. Was allerdings für die meisten der häufig gehörten und gelesenen – und dann auch immer sofort eingängigen – Aphorismen gilt. Man denkt… ja, klar. Und dann steht man da und denkt… ja, aber wie? Nun gut… dass man es in keinem Fall der Kameraautomatik überlassen sollte, zu entscheiden, was mit dem Licht anzustellen sein könnte… das ist klar.

Ein Kontrast zwischen Licht und Dunkel bringt Tiefe ins Bild. Das fasziniert bei Chiaroscuro in der Malerei. Es geht darum, das Licht zu finden und es klug zu nutzen. Das Licht bestimmt nicht nur bei Nacht, wenn es rar ist, maßgeblich die Komposition; schon beim Blick durch den Sucher wird das deutlich.

Manchmal ist das Licht unübersehbar da. Manchmal kann (und muss) man auf das Licht warten. Manchmal muss man es suchen. Wenn es da ist, muss man es schnell nutzen… Und nicht selten fragt man sich hinterher… und warum hat das nun nicht geklappt? Nicht zuletzt seit einigen Workshops und vor allem dem Workshop “‘Spot-On’ Light in the City” von Dominic Verhulst verfolgt mich die Suche nach dem Licht als fotografische Challenge. Egal ob bei Sonnenschein, Regen oder Nacht… irgendwo findet sich Licht, das sich nutzen lässt. Und mitunter findet es sich ja auch trefflich in inszenierten Umgebungen wie Galerien.

Das Auge braucht Licht … und gutes Licht und Farbe sind eine ausgezeichnete Kombination… Zuletzt konnte ich das in Spanien, in Valencia, ausschöpfen. Achte auf das Licht und die Schatten… und die Komposition. That’s it… Sagte man mir… Und sage ich dir… Und das ist die Challenge… immer wieder…

Übrigens, da hier auf diesen Seiten die Farbe dominiert: Es gilt ist nicht zu vergessen… auch Schwarz-Weiß eröffnet in der Reduktion spannende Licht-Blicke und -Momente… (Aber das ist dann ein anderes Sehen – wie ich meine).

Searching the Light… Yes… and then? Where to put it?

Photography needs light… Photography is painting with light (as it is said everywhere and again when you dedicate yourself to the subject). And that’s true, of course, but it sounds easier than it can be put into practice. Which, however, applies to most of the frequently heard and read – and always immediately catchy – aphorisms. You think… yeah, sure. And then you stand there and think… yes, but how? Well… that under no circumstances should you leave it to the camera’s automatic system to decide what to do with the light… that’s clear.

A contrast between light and dark brings depth to the image. This is what fascinates about chiaroscuro in painting. It’s about finding the light and using it wisely. Light not only determines the composition at night, when it is rare; This becomes clear when you look through the viewfinder. Sometimes the light is clearly there. Sometimes you can (and have to) wait for the light.

Sometimes you have to look for it. If it’s there, you have to use it quickly… And often you ask yourself afterwards… and why didn’t it work? Not least since a few workshops and especially the workshop “‘Spot-On’ Light in the City” by Dominic Verhulst, I have been pursuing the search for light as a photographic challenge. No matter whether it’s sunshine, rain or night… somewhere there is light that can be used. And sometimes it can also be found perfectly in staged environments such as galleries.

The eye needs light… and good light and color are an excellent combination… I was most recently able to make the most of this in Spain, in Valencia. Pay attention to the light and the shadows… and the composition. That’s it… They told me… And I tell you… And that’s the challenge… again and again…

By the way, since color dominates here on these pages: It’s important not to forget… black and white also opens up exciting glimpses and moments of light when reduced… (But that’s a different way of seeing – in my opinion ).
